چکیده

Abstract This study investigates the relationship between central tropical Pacific (CTP) sea surface temperature (SST) and air (SAT) variability un-related to canonical El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) over mid-to-high latitude Eurasia during boreal summers past half-century. The results show that their experienced a decadal shift around early 1980s. Before 1980s, Eurasian SAT-CTP SST connection was weak; after time, became stronger, SAT anomalies exhibited significant wave-like pattern Eurasia. Such change in could be attributed changes mean state of CTP SST. warmer enhanced 1980s reinforced convective activities Pacific, leading significantly anomalous divergence/convergence Rossby wave sources North Pacific. outcome further excited train propagating along Northern Hemisphere zonal jet stream northern then affected heat fluxes atmospheric circulations region, resulting SATs However, period before had weak impact on circulation consequently not able excite SATs. physical processes linking are confirmed by numerical simulations. this valuable understanding summer

A model of the tropical Pacific sea surface temperature climatology

A model for the climatological mean sea surface temperature (SST) of the tropical Pacific Ocean is developed. The upper ocean response is computed using a time dependent, linear, reduced gravity model, with the addition of a constant depth frictional surface layer. The full three-dimensional temperature equation and a surface heat flux parameterization that requires pecification ofonly wind spe...

Extratropical Air-Sea Interaction, Sea Surface Temperature Variability, and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation

We examine processes that influence North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies including surface heat fluxes, upper ocean mixing, thermocline variability, ocean currents, and tropical-extratropical interactions via the atmosphere and ocean. The ocean integrates rapidly varying atmospheric heat flux and wind forcing, and thus a stochastic model of the climate system, where white noise...

Sea ice trends in the Antarctic and their relationship to surface air temperature during 1979–2009

Surface air temperature (SAT) from four reanalysis/analysis datasets are analyzed and compared with the observed SAT from 11 stations in the Antarctic. It is found that the SAT variation from Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) is the best to represent the observed SAT. Then we use the sea ice concentration (SIC) data from satellite measurements, the SAT data from the GISS dataset and st...

Near-Surface Air Temperature Retrieval Derived from AMSU-A and Sea Surface Temperature Observations

A 10-m air temperature (Ta) retrieval using Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit A (AMSU-A) and satellite-derived sea surface temperature (Ts) observations is presented. The multivariable linear regression retrieval uses AMSU-A brightness temperatures from the 52.8and 53.6-GHz channels and satellite-derived daily sea surface temperatures to determine Ta. A regression error of 0.838C using 841 match...
